CHOOSING THE BETTER PART– By Christel Casse, Lay Pastoral Assistant. This week’s Gospel shows Jesus welcomed into the home of Martha and Mary. While Martha busies herself with tasks, Mary simply sits and listens to him. Jesus gently reminds Martha that, in all her worrying, she’s missing the most important thing: His presence. Jesus doesn’t dismiss Martha’s service, but he invites her and us to a deeper stillness. In the busyness of our lives, we’re called not just to do things for Jesus, but to spend time with Him. Mary’s choice to be present and attentive is the “better part,” and it’s one we’re invited to choose too. This week, may we find moments to slow down, rest in Christ’s presence, and let His word renew our heart

WHO IS MY NEIGHBOUR? – By Christel Casse, Lay Pastoral Assistant. The parable of the Good Samaritan challenges us to examine not just who our neighbours are, but what kind of neighbour we choose to be. When the teacher of the law asks Jesus “Who is my neighbour?” he’s asking for boundaries: who deserves my care and who doesn’t? Jesus responds with a story that turns the question upside down. The priest and Levite, respected religious figures, pass by the wounded man. Yet it’s the Samaritan, despised by Jews of that time, who stops, tends the man’s wounds, and ensures his ongoing care. The Samaritan didn’t ask about the victim’s background or worthiness. He simply saw human need and responded with compassion. In our own communities, we encounter people who need help: the elderly neighbour struggling with groceries, the family facing financial hardship, the newcomer feeling isolated. Like the Samaritan, we’re called to respond with practical love, not just good intentions. Jesus’s final words to the teacher of the law and to us are clear: “Go and do likewise.” The question isn’t who deserves our neighbourly love, but whether we’re willing to embody it.

SENT OUT WITH JOY – By Christel Casse, Lay Pastoral Assistant. Jesus sends out 72 disciples with a simple mission: go ahead of me and prepare the way. He gives them no money or extra clothes, but something far more valuable which is his authority and the message of peace. “Peace be with this house” isn’t just politeness, but a genuine offer of God’s peace. In our daily encounters, we carry this same peace. When we visit a neighbour, listen to a friend, or offer a smile to a stranger, we continue the mission of the 72. The disciples return amazed that demons obeyed them. But Jesus redirects their joy: “Don’t be glad because the evil spirits obey you; rather be glad because your names are written in heaven.” True joy comes not from what we accomplish, but from belonging to God. As we go about our week, we’re sent out like the 72. We need no special equipment, but only Christ’s peace and trust that he prepares hearts to receive the love we offer.
